Quebec Winter Festival

Trailer

The Quebec winter carnival is a pre-Lenten festival held in Quebec City, Canada. It is one of the world's largest winter carnivals, with activities for all ages, such as night parades, snow sculptures, musical performances, and more. The carnival is celebrated annually from late January to mid-February, and its ambassador is Bonhomme Carnaval, a giant snowman with a red cap and sash¹². The 70th edition of the carnival will take place from January 25th to February 11th, 2024²..

The history of Quebec winter carnival dates back to the 17th century, when the French colonists in New France celebrated the end of winter and the beginning of Lent with feasts and festivities. These celebrations were interrupted by wars and economic crises, until 1894, when the first organized winter festival was held in Quebec City, thanks to the initiative of Frank Carrel, the owner of the Quebec Daily Telegraph¹. The festival was held sporadically until 1954, when it became an annual event with the introduction of Bonhomme Carnaval, the snowman mascot of the carnival². Since then, the carnival has grown to become one of the world's largest winter festivals, with various activities, attractions, and traditions, such as ice sculptures, parades, snow baths, and the crowning of the carnival queen²³. The carnival is a symbol of Quebec's culture and identity, and a way of celebrating the joys of winter. 🎉
